I love being a military spouse. My husband, Bill, has been in the Air Force for 16 years and is now an intelligence officer. I’m proud of everything he’s accomplished.
But Bill’s steady climb through the ranks has forced us to move. Often. In the past 15 years, we’ve lived in eight different states. Eight! We’ve been in Las Vegas for the past three years, which is the longest we’ve ever stayed in one place.
As any military spouse knows, moving every few years makes it tough to land a good job. The words “permanent change of station” may as well mean permanent state of unemployment!
I found that most employers are simply wary of hiring someone who may not be around in a year or two. It’s so frustrating. The military spouses I know are some of the smartest, most ambitious, and hardest-working people I’ve run across.
Don’t get me wrong, I love military culture and the lifestyle it’s provided for me and my family. I’ve met the most amazing people and I’ve been able to explore our wonderful country. I’ve been able to stay at home and raise my kids. Believe me, I know I’m blessed.
But my career has had to take a back seat. I graduated college, majoring in health administration, and I’m a certified nutrition coach. I know I have a lot to offer. As the kids got older, I got more serious about finding a good, steady job with opportunities for advancement. You know, an actual career!
When we moved to Las Vegas, I began looking for work but wasn’t having much luck – until one night when I was browsing a Facebook group dedicated to military moms. After a mom posted about the struggles she was having at her work-at-home job, someone suggested she look into at-home customer care jobs offered by SYKESHome.
I did some online research into SYKESHome and couldn’t find one negative review about the company. Still, I was skeptical. I remember talking to my husband about SYKESHome, and he encouraged me to give it a try. “You never know until you test it out,” he said.
So I did it. I took a leap of faith and applied. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I love working at SYKESHome. The hours are flexible, and there’s room for growth. That’s so important to me.
I’ll admit I was nervous about taking a work-from-home job. I had heard horror stories from people either self-employed or working at other companies who said they felt as though they were never done with work.
I don’t have that problem with SYKESHome. When my shift ends, I turn off my computer and that’s it. If I need to take a day off I just send a note out to my team and whoever can pick up my shift does.
SYKESHome provides the flexibility and stability that I need. I love it. At 42, I finally have a career that I can be proud of.
