Sykes Philippines launches English Communications development program for BPO aspirants

According to the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP), 95 out of 100 applicants are rejected by local outsourcing companies due to skills. Benedict Hernandez, BPAP President and CEO, mentioned in one of his forums in 2012 that as the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry is growing, the need for the right talent is also increasing. “The main reason that is going to slow down our growth is talent,” he shared in a report.

As per BPAP standards, there are four (4) basic skills most outsourcing companies need: English proficiency, learning ability, computer literacy, and speed & accuracy. Hernandez added that for BPOs those skill-sets are in high demand, but English proficiency is the number one requirement. After all, the country prides itself on being the call center capital of the world. To support this purpose, SYKES established SYKES Academy – a free training program to improve the English communication skills and customer service skills of individuals interested to grow their career in the BPO industry.

What is SYKES Academy?

SYKES Academy is a two-week training program geared towards helping interested applicants to improve their communication skills and pursue a career in the BPO sector.

Who can join SYKES Academy?

Anyone of legal age with or without work experience who is willing to improve his/her language skills can apply for the training program. High school/K-12 graduates or undergraduates with some college experience are welcome to apply.

Why should I join SYKES Academy?

Aside from improving your English Communication skills and your confidence in using the language, SYKES Academy also teaches trainees about basic customer sales and customer service. These valuable skills help you improve your chances of getting employed. In fact, in 2018, almost half of the SYKES Academy graduates successfully landed a job in SYKES.

What happens if you’re accepted at SYKES Academy?

Once accepted, the trainee will be scheduled for the next available set of classes at one of SYKES’ sites in Metro Manila. Trainees receive daily meal and transportation allowance for the duration of their training. Top performing trainees receive an additional cash incentive as they complete the program.

Trainees will be evaluated every 5th and 10th day of training to check on the progress of their communication skills. Those who have shown improvement and successfully passed the training program are given the opportunity to become part of SYKES.

What happens if I don’t pass the SYKES Academy program?

Trainees are encouraged to apply and enroll for the next available set of classes to further enhance one’s English communication skills. There is no limit as to how many times a trainee can enroll for the program. As long as he/she is determined to improve one’s skills, he/she can attend the program.
