Jamie Bassett took a bit of gamble moving more than 7,000 miles from a teeny tiny island in the South Pacific to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2015. But the psychology major was ready for a new adventure, and she was hoping to find a career in HR. She began working in print production, but she quickly realized she wanted more interaction with customers. She’d heard that SYKES was opening up a new call center in the area, so she applied. Jamie’s charisma and great communication skills ended up landing her a job as a technical support agent for a popular gaming company client. It was just the foot in the door she needed. One year later, her hard work and dedication paid off, and she was offered a role in the HR department. Talk about hitting the jackpot!
What do you do?
I help onboard new SYKES employees, preparing paperwork, leading orientation sessions and supporting our HR managers as needed.
What’s a typical day at SYKES like?
Depending on what time of the year, it can start as 6 a.m., especially during the holidays. I walk new hires through their new-hire info, our benefits, safety processes and provide support for orientation and onboarding.
What’s the best part about working at SYKES?
I would have to say the teamwork we have throughout the site and our department. We really do pick up on a little bit of everything for everybody. There’s so much camaraderie.
You talk to new hires all day. What qualities do you see in people that make you instantly know they’ll be a great hire and culture fit?
Being a people person! We do a lot of ice breakers during our new-hire orientation for new agents. Typically, the people who are the friendliest, who make an effort to introduce themselves and who are really trying to get to know their fellow new hires go far a lot of the time.
What accomplishment are you most proud of at SYKES?
Being able to move out of an agent role into a leadership role.
What are your hobbies?
Spending time with my family, reading (I’m a big fan of the dystopian genre!) and watching movies
What would your superpower be?
Flying. I’m from a very small island called Koror Palau in the South Pacific. I’ve only been back there once since moving here in 2015.
When you were a kid, what did you want to be?
An Egyptologist – a person that studies Ancient Egypt
What can’t you start your morning without?
Looking outside to check the weather. I love it when it rains because it very rarely rains here.
What app can you not live without?
Instagram – I follow lot of the travel accounts.
What show are you currently binge-watching?
What do you hope you’re doing in 5 years?
Still in the HR realm with SYKES, but maybe in more of a data specialist role.
