Ronald Witherspoon, Customer Service Representative

Ronald Witherspoon is living proof that with the right support system and outlook, the human spirit can overcome just about anything. In June 2016, shortly after finding out his fiancé was expecting their first child, Ronald was shot five times during an attempted robbery. “One day I’m walking, and everything is fine,” he said. “The next, I’m paralyzed from the waist down.” His life, his wedding, his dreams of becoming a computer engineer were, at least for the moment, on hold.

After a two-month hospital stay, Ronald was in a deep state of depression, struggling to accept his new reality. Then after weeks of negative thoughts, anger and frustration toward anyone trying to help, his case manager said to him: “Ronald, your situation is not going to change. The only thing you can change is your attitude toward the situation.” It took a while for it to sink in, but soon, Ronald was ready to begin planning for a bright future for himself and his family.

What do you do?
I provide customer service for ambassadors and customers of a leading health products company. I help walk them through enrollment and navigate the system. I help with login issues, provide refunds when needed, and sometimes people just call to get the scoop on new products and promotions.

How did you learn about SYKES?
Prior to the incident, I was going to school for computer engineering. But after my accident, I told my case managers that my only goal was to provide for my family. They referred me to a vocational rehab specialist in Mobile who helps people with disabilities find jobs. SYKES was one of the employers. I started in May 2017. They trained me, set me up with all the equipment I needed, all in my own home.

What’s a typical day at SYKES like?
It’s awesome … this is the best job I’ve ever had. Normally, I come in, sign in and say a virtual “hey” to my teammates. Most of my day is spent taking calls and helping customers and ambassadors with any technical issues they’re having.

What’s the best part about working for SYKES?
The people. I know I can be a better agent, and the supervisors and managers work with me so closely. Every week, they take a look at the metrics and offer live listening to give me specific feedback. Let me tell you, the determination and capabilities SYKES has to work with you so closely, even when you’re working from home, is amazing.

What’s your favorite part of working from home?
Not having to iron my clothes and spending more time with my son.

What’s the hardest part of working from home?
Knowing my bed is literally right next-door!

What are your favorite hobbies?
Saltwater fishing. I like going for the big fish, like redfish. I catch ‘em, clean ‘em and cook ‘em. I also recently started bowling, and we’re in the process of potty training our son!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Your situation is not going to change. The only thing you can change is your attitude toward the situation.

In 5 years, what do you hope you’ve accomplished?
Improved as an agent, moved up with SYKES and finished my computer engineering degree. I’d love to put my computer engineering skills to work for SYKES someday. That would be amazing.
