SYKESHome Provides a Second Career with Purpose for Mike Ferguson

After working for more than 30 years as an account executive and process consultant for Fortune 500 companies, Mike Ferguson was beginning to feel the burn out.

“I looked at my wife and said, ‘You know what? I’m done. I’m ready to retire. I can’t do this anymore.’”

Mike had lost the drive to put in the long hours and frequent travel required for his job. He wanted to change his focus from a fast-paced career to the fast-paced hobby he shared with his wife: motorcycles.“Riding motorcycles is how my wife and I got together when we did. And it just became a big part of our lives.”

Mike decided to become a motorcycle instructor. However, living in Colorado, the work is very seasonal.

“We don’t get in a lot of training in in the wintertime. And I was getting bored, and my ‘honey-do’ list was done.”

“The reason I love what I do is I love helping people. I can help customers, and the people I work with. I believe there is no greater gift we can give another person than to make a difference in their life. And that’s why I’m here.”

Then, one day Mike’s wife came home and gave him a note that just said “SYKES.” She knew he was bored and looking for something more rewarding, and she encouraged Mike to give SYKES a call. He filled out an application and was hired as an agent in the company’s work-at-home network, SYKESHome, in December of 2013. He quickly moved on to become a coach and is now a team lead.

“I absolutely love what I do. And the reason I love what I do is I love helping people.”

Mike loves the people-first philosophy at SYKES and being a part of his team members’ professional and personal growth, which they achieve despite working virtually and without sharing an office.

“We’re not coworkers — we’re family. We develop close, really tight relationships. It’s very cool and I love it.”

It might sound strange, but Mike firmly believes that the work-from-home model creates a unique bond that doesn’t happen at brick and mortar locations. In fact, Mike and his wife have become close friends with a SYKES account manager and her husband who happen to live nearby – frequently spending time together.

Mike takes pride in helping others advance. One example was a new customer service representative who was convinced she couldn’t succeed. Mike encouraged and mentored her, and within a few weeks she excelled and after a few months was a top performer on her team.

“The reason I love what I do is I love helping people. I can help customers, and the people I work with. I believe there is no greater gift we can give another person than to make a difference in their life. And that’s why I’m here.”
