Providing Jobs; Building Careers

Phil Pugh’s former career allowed him to travel to exciting places like Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires. Today, he’s more excited about his new role at SYKES in Perry County Kentucky, helping employees there start their own rewarding careers.

“I wanted to come to SYKES so I could help build something here in South Eastern Kentucky,” Phil says, himself a native of the Bluegrass State. A coal-rich region, the local economy has been hit hard by the loss of coal jobs. “I saw SYKES as a chance to provide career opportunities locally that are growing and sustainable.”

Phil stresses that SYKES isn’t just providing jobs. “SYKES is more of a career choice, because you can learn something you can use to grow.” For example, Phil says, employees develop skills working with technology, or software skills by learning to use Microsoft Word and Excel, or learn how to write a resume and other professional skills. “These are skills you can take and they don’t lose any value.”

“We’re here to help you. We’ll do everything in our power to help make you successful. We’ll give you every tool. And if you put the effort in too, we won’t give up on you.” – Phil Pugh, SYKES site director

Phil is committed to helping people advance internally. One of his first challenges as the new director was expanding his staff of managers who supervise teams of agents. He added 10 of these new managers, filling the open positions by promoting people from within SYKES.

While most new employees at SYKES start as customer service representatives, Phil – who started his own career as an agent himself – stresses all the different career paths available. “We have training, quality management, team leads, a management track, plus all the stuff that’s available in the broader SYKES world.”

Seeing people seize these opportunities is what drives Phil. “To me it’s very rewarding to see people come in, learn something and move up.” He has a passionate message for anyone looking for career opportunities: “We’re here to help you. We’ll do everything in our power to help make you successful. We’ll give you every tool. And if you put the effort in too, we won’t give up on you.”
