How I Traded a Three Hour Commute for a Home Office

I met my husband, Brent, a Senior Airman in the U.S. Air Force, on an online dating site in June 2012. A month later, we were married! What can I say? Things in my life tend to happen pretty quickly.
But that’s not always the case. Consider the job search I conducted last year, shortly after my wedding.
Brent and I had decided to start our lives together in Wichita, Kan., where he was stationed. But that was at least an hour’s drive from the town where I had been attending college and working at a sign production plant.
I quickly tired of the punishing early-morning and late-night commutes, not to mention the back-breaking 12-hour shifts I pulled at the plant. I searched for work in Wichita, but the job market was brutal. I sent in application after application, but nothing materialized. After a few months, I was ready to give up.
But then I heard from SYKES Home, which offered me a job as a customer care professional. The wonderful catch: I would get to work at home!
Once I began working for SYKES Home last fall, the stress in my life just melted away. My dreaded commute? Gone. When I wake up in the morning, I no longer have to rush out the door to make sure I get to work on time. I just take a few steps to my home office and focus on the work at hand. It’s such a liberating feeling.
The work itself is incredibly rewarding. I found that I simply love helping people solve their problems. I quickly got a promotion and now spend much of my time as a quality analyst, helping SYKES Home customer care professionals improve their interactions with customers.
I earn a steady paycheck, receive as much training and support as I need, and I’ve even made friends with colleagues. We check in with each other on the company messaging system. And if my husband gets transferred to another Air Force base, I can take my job with me.
Before SYKES Home, I had no idea that these kinds of jobs even existed. The benefits of working from home are seemingly endless – especially now that my husband and I are expecting a baby. I couldn’t imagine working a 12- hour shift at a dead-end, physically demanding job that requires a two-to-three hour commute each day, while pregnant. Um, no thanks!
My job at SYKES Home puts my husband at ease while he’s deployed overseas. He doesn’t have to worry about me driving on the highway late at night. I’m much more available to take his calls and am around to take care of any household issues that arise. I also know that working at home will give me much more time to spend with my baby.
I still consider myself a new military spouse, but every day I learn more about this way of life – its rhythms, challenges, and amazingly rewarding opportunities. And I know that work-from-home jobs like I have at SYKES are a great fit for military families.
Fortunately, I haven’t had to deal with moving to a new Air Force base, but it’s truly comforting to know my job is safe no matter how often I have to move. SYKES Home has truly been a lifesaver.
