Are you one of those fresh grads who are doubtful on applying for a call center? Despite the BPO industry’s continuous growth in the Philippines, most graduates are still hesitant to explore a career with these types of companies because of the misconceptions that surround the job and the industry itself. With its different approach to customer service, a unique work structure, and schedule, many people are still unsure if it is the best move to start a career in a call center.
We interviewed some of SYKES’ tenured employees who were successful in establishing themselves within the call center industry. We asked them about their experiences, their reasons for staying with the business, as well as some advice for fresh grads who might be interested in applying with the company. We also asked for help to create a list of the reasons on how fresh grads can make the most out of this industry.
From the fun work environment to great benefits, we’ve listed down the top 5 reasons why the industry is a perfect place to jumpstart a stable career.
Experience a fun work environment.
Contrary to popular belief, the industry is not a monotonous place where people only go to work to answer calls. Some people would think that there is little to no interaction between peers at work, but the reality is that the teams and accounts develop a tight-knit friendship between its members.
Ted, one of our team leaders, shared to us that in his account “it felt like he had a second family.” At SYKES, we believe in the culture of support, and Ted agrees that he was able to experience that in the company. He says that he doesn’t feel pressured at work because he is understood and supported by his superiors and team members.
As for JP, a customer service representative for our health care account, he told us that he finds comfort with his team during stressful moments. “Even if we have so many things to do, my teammates would just laugh and it’s contagious,” he says. “It helps us to relax and be more inspired to work.”
Have a work-life balance.
While most rest days differ from one account to another, being a part of a call center assures that you will never have to bring your workload at home. Vhal, one of our team managers, shares that she “appreciates having more time to herself and her family”.
With SYKES, we also make sure that our employees get a chance to explore their passions through the clubs and programs that we have in the company. Jen, a member of SYKES Synergy Dance Group, says that “being able to have an outlet for her passion makes her more inspired to do better at work.” We also have different activities that cater to the interests of our employees such as family days and sports fest, engaging them and providing an avenue to relax and unwind from the busy work days.
Learn a lot about the realities of being a part of the workforce.
There is more to learn in a call center than knowing how to answer the phone. From patience to versatility to honing communication and people skills, the industry will push you to your limits to see what you can do.
“Being in a call center is taking over a whole new profession. In an instant, you have to be someone else and assume roles that you never thought you’ll fulfill,” one of our agent shares. “It teaches you a lot of things and makes you realize that there is so much to learn within just one profession.”
Find personal, career, and financial growth.
Being a progressive and fast growing industry in the Philippines, call centers are known to provide superb compensation packages. In SYKES, we make sure that our employees feel secure and safe by providing benefits that would address employee concerns and worries, as well as a competitive salary package for their needs. We also make sure that we continuously recognize the hard work of our employees by providing promotions for qualified candidates, as well as acknowledging the importance of their role at work.
Justin, one of our Technical Service Representatives, shares his success on finding growth within just his first few months in the company. “After four months of working in our account, I was immediately promoted to Tier 2. By that time, I was still in probationary, have no prior work experience, and I came fresh from the university. It was a surprise for me,” he says. “I am glad that they trusted me enough to give me a bigger responsibility.”
As long as we see an employee’s potential and capabilities, we make sure that we acknowledge it and give you the recognition that you deserve.
You will be able to practice what you have learned in school.
One of the biggest misconceptions about call centers is that agents are only required to make phone calls. For those who are not familiar, call centers are actually created to cater particular concerns that need specific expertise. Khey, a tourism graduate who supports a travel account, shares that “the job that she’s doing right now is definitely related to what she have studied.” She also says that “the work is much like in a hotel or an airline, but with better security, greater benefits, and more time to yourself.”
There are a handful of accounts available with SYKES, providing support for an array of top global companies, and these accounts usually require background and knowledge to specific topics such as health, travel, hospitality, telecommunications, and finance, among many others. Regardless of your course, there will still be a job that would suit you and you can still maximize what you’ve learned in the university within the industry.
